It probably happens too quickly for you to see what is happening with
Activity Monitor?
Another possibility is a search of certain log files that the Mac creates..
I am not sure where these can be found, but someone will come up with an
answer, I expect.

That had crossed my mind but no idea how to check. Nothing has shown up in the
Sent folder. I used to have the free Sophos virus checker but deleted it a few
months ago. Maybe I should download it (or something similar again).

to your contacts in your address list.
Was there any sign of the outgoing emails in your sent folder?
It is worth checking but I am not sure if this virus does leave such evidence.

Not an IOS problem! Boring old Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and Mail. Just opened my
MacBook Air up from sleep and I almost immediately got the sound of emails
disappearing into the ether (about one every second) even though there was
nothing waiting to go. I quit Mail and that stopped it and having reopened it
all is normal again. It has happened a couple of times before - last time about
a month ago after waking from sleep.
