MacBookPro5,2 here with 8 GB memory and an sshd. I tested most seeded 
builds of OS X 10.9, but not often enough to judge whether 4 GB memory will 
be sweet on any particular Mac. 

Thanks to compressed memory and other technical novelties, most people 
should expect to get better performance from Mavericks than from Mountain 
Lion. The degree to which improvements are noticeable will vary depending 
on use case. 

Mavericks aside: I'm with Sam on the general recommendation to aim for 
maximum memory. 

All things considered: you might like to wait until a few weeks after 
Mavericks is released before making a purchasing decision.
