If you plan to never push the laptop hard, then 16 GB could be excessive. A 
2011 model … do you imagine using it until 2016? Or less than five years? 

What's the model identifier? You'll get this from System Information. 

Hard disk drive, or solid state? If it's a hard disk, what speed? 

When the Mac is next at its busiest, run this command in Terminal: 

ls -hlrtU /private/var/vm/swap*

– then paste the output to this topic. It's not the most scientific way of 
measuring memory usage, but it'll give me a rough idea of how memory and 
swap files are used.
