Howard, I have been using Garmin Edge devices for cycling for around 7 years over different models. As long as you eject it from the Finder window and wait for the computer icon on the device to disappear before you actually unplug it you should be fine. If the problem persists then I would try a complete reset of the device. Use Garmin Training Centre or Garmin Connect to back up all your ride data and courses and then follow online instruction to reset the device according to whichever model you have.
