If you browse to the server (Finder, Shift-Command-K and so on) to initiate the connection, then maybe it's Bonjour – with wireless as the default at some point.
If instead you specify an address to initiate the connection, then I can't guess why it won't work over wired Ethernet. I have, but no longer use, a BT Home Hub 2.x. If I recall correctly, there should be a way for it to open up what's required.
