I bought an Air to replace an iPad 3.

Improvements for me are:

Weight - The iPad Air is so light it feels as though it's hollow. It really
makes a difference.

Battery - I used to get 6-7 hours out of the iPad 3. I haven't run the Air's
battery down yet but it's obvious that it will be considerably longer than the
3. I wouldn't be surprised to get 10 hours out of it on a good day.

Speed - Certain apps start faster and the startup time is quicker. Not hugely
important to me.

Negatives:

Screen - the glass feels very thin. At first I wondered if it was made of
plastic. It is glass but it does feel more 'bouncy'. I don't think it's a
problem but after a week it still feels strange.

Lightning connector - On the iPad it feels, to me, fiddly compared to the
iPhone..

Both the above are nit picks.
Hope this helps
Philippe
