Hi Virginia,

Yep.

I've gone from iPad 1 to iPad Air so it's quite a jump!

It's much lighter, smaller and WAAAAAAAAY faster than my old one. The Retina
display is beautiful, I now have a camera for Facetime and Siri works
brilliantly. The BBC News app loads the entire page in about 2 seconds at most
instead of 10 or 15. Safari hasn't crashed once. I can run iOS7 which looks
lovely (in my opinion) and allows me to install post iOS5 updates. iBooks opens
so fast it's almost instant whereas before I'm be staring at en empty bookshelf
for at least 10 seconds. iCloud never worked properly on iOS5 so also much
improvement there.

I also went from 16GB to 32GB as I realised after about 6 months of owning my
original that I should have got the 32GB. Games like Infinity Blade, apps like
Solar System and Solar Walk and now books such as (yipee!) The World Atlas of
Wine all take a load of space which I'd never factored into my original choice
as I'd imagined it having the same sized apps as my iPod touch. Oops.

The screen flexes more than the original and makes a sound higher up the scale
than before which is a little odd, but just an adjustment really. It's
beautifully made and feels graceful and light (even Airy!) whereas my iPad 1
felt solid and dependable. I'm hoping this is light and dependable. :)

I have the 3G version, as with my original, and that's now working after
registering the new nano-SIM yesterday. I also get a WiFi hotspot with this and
iOS7 so my partner will be able to use his MacBook air wirelessly if I can get
a 3G (4G?) signal.

I did think quite a bit about waiting for the new iPad mini but as I have no
laptop and have often take minutes for meetings and more on my iPad I felt that
the smaller screen of the mini would be too cramped. There is always my
wireless keyboard but I don't always have the space for that when I'm out.
Also, my eyes are sadly not what they were and I felt that the larger screen
would be handy. Certainly, the iPad feels like an IMAX cinema after looking at
the same thing on my 'iPod TV' :)

I'm dead chuffed with it at the moment and I'm sure I'll be as pleased with it
as I have been with my iPad 1 (despite me slagging it off above!). Of course,
when iOS10 is out, the Air will feel ponderous and half the apps won't run on
it. As the old computer saw has it, "If it works, it's obsolete".

Finally, Apple's recycling will offer £60 for my original, but three, identical
to mine (possibly not such good condition either) have gone for £135, £165 and
£185 in the last week on eBay!! I was gob-smacked so mine will probably be
there next week. Fingers crossed for a good price.

I hope that helps.

Stephen

"A power generation method that is so expensive, so incomprehensibly technical,
so centrally organised, so elusive of democratic control, so elitist, so
male-dominated, so thoughtlessly, massively exploitative of resources - such a
system mirrors precisely those areas in our society most in need of ecological
change" - from a Green Party leaflet over 20 years ago discussing Nuclear Power
