I'm not sure what those "bad reviews on the latest version" are about. I've had Aperture V1, V2 and now V3.5 and it's got better with each release.
You could pop into an Apple store and try Aperture for yourself and Lightroom can be trialled here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom&promoid&promoid=DTEML There may well be other programs too.
