Right then,

Holding down the Alt key did allow me to see options, one of which was restore
from backup, this process is currently under way and is estimated to take 7
hours, we shall see.

Unfortunately, this will put Mountain Lion and all my old files back on the
machine, but at least I will be able to have another attempt at prepping it for
sale.
As I understand it, In order to do this I need to revert back to the OS that
came with the machine, (Snow Leopard.) any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks.

If by utility partition you mean, what sometimes appears as Recovery HD: that
should not appear - the reinstallation was of Snow Leopard.

Fingers crossed for Steve to see anything :)
