these updates seem important enough to flag to people as urgent if you
ever use a public wifi network of any kind.
In the briefest terms, without these updates, your secure link to sites
like banks or email services can be spied on by someone on the same
network. iOS 5 is not affected (i.e. it's safe).
More urgently, it seems present in OS X 9.1 - the latest system. This
means that until it's patched you should not do anything sensitive
(check email or use passwords) in an unsafe wireless network (i.e. one
that is not yours or your employers').
The people left exposed seem to be those running iOS 6 on a device that
*could* run iOS 7 as it will only offer the update to iOS 7 (which you
might not want).
This site <https://www.imperialviolet.org:1266> will tell you if your
machine is vulnerable. (don't leave out the number at the end)
