Which iMac, what type of drive, and how much memory?

Which version of the OS?

Is the problem reproducible if your wife launches Safari with extensions
switched off?

If reproducible whilst extensions are switched off, then please:

   1. switch on extensions (if that's the norm for her)
   2. start the OS in safe mode
   3. restart the OS
   4. retry Safari.

If the problem persists – and if the drive is hard disk or solid state
hybrid – then use iDefrag to see whether the catalog file is fragmented …
