I gave up backing up to iCloud. You always end up fiddling around with
the settings like this, and I got bitten badly when I restored a phone
from iCloud. All the passwords were gone [no longer an issue, I guess]
and most importantly, Google authenticator stopped working which meant I
lost access permanently not just to my gmail address but can't even use
the back-up address for a separate google account as it demands
authentication for a new account with that as the address!
And yes, I did go through the 'recover your account' protocol, about 19
times, to no avail. It won't send a text to my phone and they won't
respond to my attempts to get it back because they ask me daft questions
like 'when did you open the account?' (answer -- 'within the first three
years of gmail. Probably. I don't know. Does anyone remember this kind
of thing?')
None of which is directly relevant to iCloud -- but an encrypted back-up
to disk is FAR better for a restore than from iCloud. I do have an
iCloud back-up which I update sporadically in case of terminal loss of
machines (e.g. house fire).
