The way iCloud drive is intended to work is that you can save a text file from
TextEdit in iCloud drive and then open it in Pages on your iPad, or you can
print a page as a PDF from your Mac and then open it on your iPhone! This to me
is one of the most useful things built into iOS, along with app extensions
(which now means that after all these years, I can use 1Password directly from
inside Safari on my iPad - result!)

I thought though that until Yosemite is released upgrading to iCloud Drive on
your iPhone might mean that you lose access to saved documents in iCloud from
your Mac. I'm not quite sure so I've left well alone until Yosemite makes its
appearance.
