In cases like this (minor reinstalls) 
A) it's probably the preferences or data
B) better to right click and 'compress' first.

Then if it goes horrible wrong, it's very simple to restore to where you 
started. 

Finding where stuff *is* might be harder. Can you turn off iMessage 
integration? That might clear caches etc.
