I think you replied to the wrong message;)
You have no idea how much complication I saved you all from on this
front. The simplistic version is this: many other MUG leaders think
there is a kind of formula which involves meeting up regularly and
having promotional talks etc (I went to a couple for LMUG before i left
that asylum). This also requires membership validation for eg entry and
discounts, which are usually not amazing. This requires membership fees,
say a fiver a year, which creates enormous administrative overload for
very little gain in my view.
Seeing as this followed the migration to google groups, which was not
easy and flummoxed plenty of people (including me), when this came round
I said 'no thanks, we're good'. Which led to a lot of emails with
people-who-clearly-have-too-much-time-on-their-hands saying we *ought*
to have this and that, because that's what they do. In the end
(confession time, no-one knew this outside that circle!) I threatened to
form a breakaway MUG as they are to all intents and purposes a
self-designated category these days... and they backed down. Apple does
not play much of a role in these groups and seems not to care about us,
not answering emails etc (which is fine by me). But they don't interfere
either, and we are on a list *somewhere* of official groups.
I stress all this this was because a) the attempts to have people meet
up here generally don't get that far b) collecting a token amount to
create a category of 'paid-up member' seemed an astonishing amount of
work for about 200 people which I couldn't undertake.
But mainly it was 'this is a great list, don't mess with it'.
I'm no longer the admin but the line was always if people want to meet,
go ahead and organise it here on the list;) I assume it hasn't changed
much (I await the moderator's verdict)
