In October 1987 I was lucky enough to become a student at Portsmouth School of Architecture, where Ranulph was one of the tutors to the 1st year studio. Coming to discussion of not only Architecture, but philosophy and cybernetics was mindblowing to a student fresh from science A' Levels. Ranulph was very approachable, only daunting because of he complexity of his thought.
As if that wasn't enough, Ranulph did something else that still contributes to my life today. Together with Jay Potts, he introduced a Macintosh to the school of Architecture. Firstly just one, which soon gained a second floppy drive (the luxury). Then more followed. Never before had I encountered a computer that could be explored without reference to a manual. I bought my first in 1990. Many years later, through my involvement with LMUG, I joined the SMUG web forum, and was delighted to see that familiar name, and have further access to the thoughts of Ranulph. Thank You Ranulph, may you rest in peace. Condolences to you all, and to Ranulph's family. As Sam says, raise a glass in his honour. I know he would appreciate that. Paul Portsmouth student, 1987-1990, and a Mac user ever since.
