Does anyone who understands the various passwords or not help me out here?

iMessages never lets me sign in on my Mac Pro (but it does on my Air). It used to, then just stopped one day and no number of re-entering it has worked. Everything else is happy signing in, iTunes, iCloud etc. So I tried to change the password hoping iMessage would start working again. Now, though I carefully noted the password I changed it to, the old and the new are both rejected in iTunes when I tested it.

Are these passwords actually the same or can they be changed separately? They seem to be just one but I can't work out how iTunes and iMessage can work and not work respectively on the same machine. Currently, I can't sign in to either -- does it take some time to work through the system? I've checked the new password is entered correctly both by looking at the text I copied and pasted, and also by looking in Keychain.

I haven't turned on 2-step authentication because as far as I can't tell, even 1-step is dodgy and I'm tired of being locked out of my own account.
