I've done every possible thing there too. The settings just don't stick
on any device. I don't particularly feel like reinstalling the OS fresh,
which is probably the only thing I haven't done!
Mind you, that might persuade iMessages to work again...
This is the price of buying a Mac Pro and just upgrading the OS year on
year -- it gets corrupted in small but troublesome ways...
