Thank you so much for your help, Tony, Stephen and Sam.

Derek received another photo by email and this time when he “saved to Photos” 
everything worked beautifully as you described. He thinks the original photo 
might have been sent in some weird format that prevented it from being saved.

All now seems to be well! Thank you again.
