Thanks Sam, I haven't explained too well here my apologies! He spilt coffee on his laptop we have drained as best we could but it still does not want to work properly! The cup was nearly empty, we can't believe it! What I wanted to try to do is access his hard drive to extract all his files! We know emails are as good as dead! Certain keys don't work! Coffee no sugar! On which computer does one hold down the T please! I cannot believe it silly man! I think it will have to be thunderbolt cable!

Thanks, Peter

If you mean file sharing, should be enough to have File Sharing enabled in System Preferences > Sharing, then they’re both on the same wifi network (use the username & password on the mac you’re connecting *to* when connecting). You can select the Mac in the sidebar of a Finder window. It doesn’t need to be enabled on both machines, unless if you want to connect from either one.

If you mean target disk mode, restart holding T on the keyboard and connect the two with a firewire or thunderbolt cable.

If you mean screen sharing, same as file sharing but enable Screen Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing.
