I will try asking them, Sam!
I wonder if I could just try and do the Time Machine backup restore
in-store and leave the old drive if all goes well? It might take a while
and I ma not sure if they would let me...
I am beginning to wish I had done the replacement myself and perhaps
upgraded while I was at it.

Hi Richard
Can you ask them to have the drive back temporarily then give it back
to them once you’ve recovered the data?
Regards
Sam

I am not sure what to do about this.
My two and a half year old iMac recently suffered a broken hard
drive. I have taken it in to the Apple store and they have replaced
the hard drive for £140. I have a Time Machine backup and some
partial backups made using target disk mode before I took it in. I
am hoping that the Time Machine backup will get me back up and
running as before but I asked them if I could have the old drive
back in case I needed that to try and rescue any more data. (I also
thought it would be more secure to get it back and dispose of it
myself.)
They say they can do that but it will cost me another £100 because
they would otherwise return it to the manufacturer who would recycle
it.
So I have a faulty Mac which has cost me a lot of grief (long story)
as well as a fair amount of cash and now I have to spend even more
to buy my own, faulty hard drive!
