The ‘happy’ end to the story is that I went in and did the Time Machine restore 
in store. It took 3.5 hours but they were happy for me to do it there and it 
seems to have worked (so I could have done it at home…). I declined to buy my 
faulty hard drive back off them.

I did check out how to replace a hard drive and it looked like more than I 
would want to take on. But putting in a larger SSD drive might have been a 
good, but more expensive option.
