I can’t remember how it used to appear on iOS, but I don’t think it was as a
text message. It doesn’t appear on iOS at all now.

I went to log in to iCloud.com in Safari on my iMac a few hours ago and it
asked me to enter the verification code, but the verification code appeared in
a dialog box on my iMac(!) which, if I was a dodgy person, would have then
given me the 2nd step with which to login, thus rendering the two-step process
pointless. The verification code is surely intended to appear on one of my
other devices that I, as the genuine user, am supposed to have about me so that
I retrieve the verification code from one of them, not my iMac that I’m using
to login anyway!
