I joined SMUG some time in 2003 when it was the only place you could get good
knowledge, I was running 6.5 at the time and the list was busy and poor Keven
who lived at end of a telephone pole with a dialup modem couldn't keep up.
Jason Kitcat, there was a few Jason's then put out the following to help us
all. Hope you remember this.

General Note on List Manners

September 27 2004 at 12:07

Hi everyone

ATTENTION CONSERVATION NOTICE: (If you don't want to read the whole email read
this!)

I think it would be great if people would go to SMUG as a last resort source of
help and not a first resort. That way we'll keep a lot more goodwill in the
group and have fewer posts to the list.

----

In the last few weeks there's been an incredible number of messages whizzing
around the SMUG list.

As usual many people have stepped up to offer their help. However I think for
many members their patience has been tried by the volume of messages irrelevant
to them on the list. So can I offer the following reminders or notes on using
the list.

1. When having trouble with something on your Mac please use the Help system,
look at the relevant documentation and try <http://www.apple.com/support/> and
search <http://www.google.com/mac> to find solutions for your problem.

2. The people on this list are all very busy people. Many of us like helping
others out because we know there comes a day when we also need helping out. But
we all have jobs/businesses/research/etc to do. So please do all in Step 1
before proceeding to asking for help on SMUG.

3. When troubleshooting issues it is usual to take emails off list when it
descends to "Does it do that?" "No" "Ok, well then push that and click there"
"That doesn't work" "Well does it make this noise?" and soon. When the problem
is resolved you come back on list and post what the problem was and how you
solved it. This makes the list a much more useful resource for everyone.

I think it would be great if people would go to SMUG as a last resort source of
help and not a first resort. That way we'll keep a lot more goodwill in the
group.

Please feel free to agree or disagree with me but one-liner emails should be
off-list to me via

All the best,

Jason

Merry Christmas everyone :-)

I don’t remember the dates exactly, I’d need to spend some time in the email
archives. But it was around 2001/2 that the group going but I didn’t start it,
I just resurrected it. At the time there was Apple support for user groups and
they said there was a dormant group I could resurrect. There was a small list
and support from Cancom on Queens Road. We used to meet on Middle Street in a
place that was then called SUMO but has changed many times since!

I remember seeing Stephen’s new iPod back then, a-maz-ing :-)

All the best,
Jason

Nick,

Jason Kitkat could tell you when exactly he started SMUG. Derek and I remember
SMUG meetings in the basement below a restaurant somewhere near the seafront, a
while before it moved up the hill. I remember seeing Stephen there, showing off
his brand new Ipod!

Happy New Year everyone!

Couldn’t have expressed it better myself and although I don’t know the start
date of the group at a guess I have been benefitting for at least 17 years
starting with the meeting in the pub across the road from Brighton Station!

Merry Christmas to you all. Even though I spend most of my retired time in
spain now, I still follow the group and try to chip in when I can. However
mostly I just read the posts and occasionally pick up a gem of information. We
have so many members well versed in all things Apple Mac who are prepared to
give up their time to help us numpkins get our work done, thank you all. And a
special thank you to Sam who so aptly calls himself MacAmbulance and has helped
all of us at some time over and over.
This past year seems to have been a bit of a horror for so many people and in
so many ways which will be felt for a long long time. Very big political
movements, so many well loved people and artists have left us and each of us
have had our own little struggles which only we know about and will never
burden anyone else.
This group is like having good friends one has never met. I wish you all
prosperity and health in the forthcoming year.
