I took an old iMac (6,1) out of a cupboard where it had been lying undisturbed
for probably several years. Switched it on, started it up, it started fine;
put a DVD in the sideloading internal drive, the iMac inhaled it and opened
Front Row (remember that) and then started playing it. Great. I wanted to
re-purpose it as a standalone DVD player for someone.
Then I put it in the back of a car and left it there to get nice and cold for
a few weeks. Took it out and put under a bed for a month.
Finally at xmas I started it up again, all fine; and attempted to put a DVD in
the drive. Nothing happened. No attempt to inhale the disc; no sign that the
drive was alive. Similarly using Disk Utility.
Presumably the shock of being awoken after its long slumber was too much for
it; or perhaps the thermal shock of the freezing cycle (although I did give it
a nice long time to acclimatise after it).
Are there any tricks I could try? Is it likely to be worth attempting to open
the machine up and get to the drive in order to see if there's anything really
obvious like a loose connection?
If the answers to the above are no, are one of those little £20-£30 portable
USB drives sold for use with laptops any good? Would Front Row work with them?
Does anyone have a recommendation?
Many thanks,
Ben
