I've owned the original iPad from 26th May 2010 and then replaced it with my
iPad Air. I use them every day and neither had/has even a scratch on the
screen. I had a iPod touch 2nd gen since release and replaced it with a 5th gen
touch and neither had/has even a scratch on the screen. My parter has owned an
iPhone 5c for just over two years and its screen is unmarked, despite it being
dropped twice. None of these devices have ever had cases or screen protectors.

I dislike extra things stuck on any screens and hope Apple never decide to use
them. Given the damage pictured to the screen of your iPhone I can't imagine
that a screen protector would have saved it - perhaps a polystyrene box might
have saved it! :-)
