For anyone who comes after me with a similar allergy to tying everything to
their google account:
- when you look at the web page
http://groups.google.com/group/smug
there is no visible control to join the group. If you click "New Topic" it
asks you to log into your Google account, presumably as the next step towards
joining the group.
- however, you can construct a URL which will open a generic join dialog:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/smug/join
(Obviously, if there is a more straightforward way to access this which I
missed, please let me know!)
