When you erased the drive was it with the GUID partition tablenor MBR? Try with
the former and the volume in the Mac OS Extended (journaled) format.

If after that you still can't back up then it'll most likely be a hardware issue

Dear Smuggers,

I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 inch
External Hard Drive for PC and Mac from Amazon, intending to use it for Time
Machine backups with my newly acquired MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012),
(10.12.3), but just get the message that ‘Time Machine can’t complete the
backup’.

I followed advice on Seagate website and erased the disk in Disk Utility. I’ve
reformatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I’ve also downloaded and
installed Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX, which the Seagate site says should sort the
problem. Except it doesn’t.

Is there anything else that I could try? (Otherwise I’ll be returning to
Amazon).

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes
Catherine
