iOS uses something which Apple calls the Secure Enclave to protect secure info on your iPhone and iPad, such as TouchID info. I recall that it is linked to the front button. Not even Apple can get into the finger print data stored on your iPhone.
So if the front button was disturbed (even disconnected and reconnected) when your screen was changed the link to the Secure Enclave will be broken. As you say below, the only way to restore the link to the Secure Enclave is to go to Apple. This is just my understanding, but hope it helps. You can try googling 'secure enclave’.
