Wow that’s crazy! I burned a music CD in Catalina just the other day, for
the first time in years in iTunes and that worked the same as ever. I
think HFS volume is not common for Cdroms so I guess that’s why the lack of
support, they decided not enough people use it or would notice. I’ve
always found historically macs to be very flexible for mounting all kinds
of media, guess those days are going.

In terms of getting the data off I have an old iMac running 10.6.8 and I’m
sure many other members of the group have old working macs lying around or
in cupboards, you might even be able to install an older version of OS X
yourself onto a USB hard drive from your original recovery dvds (or
installer DMG If Lion or that sort of vintage) but as you say you have a
hard drive so your safe for now. Time to buy another one or a NAS?

I understand old formats dying out, I occasionally hear of people finding
old Zip disks and looking for someone with an old old G4 with a Zip
drive... but a cd. In a computer with a perfectly serviceable cd/dvd
drive. Totally crazy!
