Thanks - useful confirmation.

Just completed Attemp 2 (this time from a spinning external USB drive, don't do that) has worked except for the privacy settings for disk access and screen sharing etc (I can live with that).

But I'm very tired of typing in my icloud password! It's a bit overzealous when it wants you to sign in order to access the bit that demands your password...

Other amusing glitches: test out Music by playing an album - cue very many alerts, one for each track, that the computer isn't authorised, then a message that this video won't play on this screen (80s Rush albums were not video-intense, as I remember...)

But the machine is now functioning recognisably and is as nimble and quiet as they promised:) Just need one or two more monitor adaptors...

Also have found that no key combinations work at start-up here (two keyboards, no effect), not even 'alt'. Not sure what that's about but a call to Apple has established that resetting the SMC is not a thing any more. Anyone else seeing this/not seeing it?

Big Sur looks good. Happy customer here...

cheers,
Jason

I’ve just setup a new MacBook Air (M1) using Migration Assistant (migrated everything available) from a 5 year old MacBook Air, as far as I have tested all the serials numbers and other settings went across.

Thanks Sam. I’ll give it another go using a different back up source.

In my experience Migration Assistant successfully imports everything which doesn’t rely on the serial number of the logic board or hard drive for authentication

So I took the plunge and got a Mac Mini and will run both the old tank of a Mac Pro for some things (remotely) and this new beast.

I ran migration assistant (which seemed to choke on Applications so in the end I omitted those). However, I'm not convinced it has moved much data - nothing has its settings or licence info and the thought of entering each and every one (if I can find them) fills me with great impatience. Should Migration Assistant have copied that over or am I expecting too much?
