Hi,

I’m wondering if there is a way of applying an update to Big Sur on a clone
of an M1 Mac internal drive that is on an external SSD?

I’ve found that running from the external SSD and using the Software Update
in System Preferences fails at the Restart point when it asks for an Admin
User’s password but doesn’t accept what is a valid password.

I’ve found that you can update Big Sur, like from 11.1 to 11.2, by dint of
downloading the full 12+GB Big Sur installer and doing a clean install.
Just takes a lot longer.

Any suggestions? I’m using an Integral SSD as the external drive which
isn’t the fastest in the world but is a bit smaller than two credit cards
put together, reasonably priced, and very portable.
