Not quite the same experience but I have downloaded an app to try on one
device and then shortly afterwards deleted it, to find that it has
automatically installed on other devices.

This leads me to think that the 'auto' bit relates to one’s Apple ID
account rather than specific devices. I was unable to find if this is how
Apple sees it. The Apple support material is somewhat opaque on what
happens automatically for the App Store, as it does when referring to
'Manual'.
