Just as an FYI Virginia, Word documents were natively saved as .doc format
until 2003. Microsoft changed the default format of a Word document in 2003 to
.docx.

So, a 19+ year old version of Word cannot open a .docx Word document but any
version of Word from 2003 onwards will open both .doc and .docx.

The same is true of all Office apps - until 2003 the extensions for Word, Excel
and PowerPoint were .doc, .xls & .ppt but since 2003 the corresponding
extension/format is .docx, .xlsx & .pptx. Consistency, yay!

I hope that helps a bit.
