Yeah it’s a bit weird. You need a separate eSIM from the same provider. My wife
has one and I think pays 7-10 quid a month. At one point it was only EE and 02
who offered it. She can make calls on it when out and about but it seems to
route them via her main (phone) number. Using *that* from an iPad or Mac
requires the phone be online even if elsewhere. I’ll ask her if it works when
phone is off.

One thing about the watch is that it picks up calls (even without cellular,
like mine) and you end up answering on that, then it gets silly as the speaker
is tiny. You might need to explain not to answer on the watch, just go to the
phone and answer there.

But I’m confident the SOS will work away from the phone and she can make calls
from it (best done with Siri).

I’ll ask the wife for more info if you have any questions. ,

Happy day after Boxing Day, all!

Quick query about Apple Watches. My partner is considering getting an Apple
Watch for her mum - probably a refurb older series - who lives on her own and
might benefit from the peace of mind of having the emergency SOS function on
her wrist.

Hence, we were considering the cellular version in case she needs the emergency
SOS function while out of reach of her iPhone.

Can anyone tell me whether a separate data plan is required for the cellular
version of the Apple Watch? I have done some cursory research which suggests a
separate data plan is required but it must be with the same provider as that of
the iPhone she already has. I have also seen some chatter that if the watch is
purchased from the existing iPhone data provider, then there will be no
additional cost for the additional Watch data plan.

Apologies this might be a bit off topic but any insight would be useful.
