Ok I see. If it says it will take
PC133 then it should work. *Sometimes* a PC133 will not run in a PC100
bus. It's a hit and miss proposition. More likely though, since
you clarified you have a single stick is:
a) compatibility problem. It
happens, even if the specs are correct some motherboards simply don't
play nice with some memory.
b) bad stick. It happens with
regularity, particularly with generic brands.
c) bad setting in the BIOS, you may have
to physically change the setting to PC133. Most Compaqs can access the
bios by pushing F10 as it boots up, some of the desktops make you press delete
while booting up.

We dont have two of 256 mb each, its just one
that is 512 mb. I did, of course, check hp.com fr the specifications and it
said that we needed either pc100 or pc133. We bought 168 pin, pc133, I was
told that pc133 would read in both 100 and 133 speed computers.
If it was the wrong kind would it even read up to
the 128 mb that it does ?

Charles...Question...:-0)
If you put one in alone it should boot
up to 256 megs. But you are telling me you put the *old* memory in and
it booted up fine. It is most likely you got the wrong memory. For
example you may need PC100 and you bought PC200. Or yours may be old
enough that you need the PC33. What is most likely happening is the
computer bus is not fast enough for the new memory. The specs for your
specific computer, including which style memory it takes should be either in
the manual or online at hp.com .

Me bugging you again. :-0)
This is kind of weird and hard to explain, so
Im just taking a wild guess that maybe you will know what is going on. And
Alex might know when he gets home, but....
We bought new memory for the computer.
Supposedly 512 mb. There are two slots in this computer. I know both are in
working order because I put the old memory in both at one time and it booted
up fine. It depends which slot the new memory is in on what it does, but
basicly the Compaq screen comes up and in the left hand corner it will say
"" mb ok. The highest that number has gone up to is 183, after that it
either stops altogether and wont finish or it goes to a white screen with a
whole bunch of colored dots.
Do you now why ? Wrong kind ? Bad memory stick
?
Thanks
