Women Wins Lawsuit Over Manicure

A South Carolina woman has been awarded $847,000 in damages after contracting an infection during a manicure at The Breakers resort in Palm Beach, Fla. The infection left her with limited use of her right thumb. Sixty-three-year-old Julie Lofink, vacationing with her husband at the resort in September 2001, had her skin punctured during a manicure, which allowed a staph infection to develop, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "The Breakers is shocked at the conclusion reached by a Fort Lauderdale jury," P. Kristen Kay, director of legal services for The Breakers, says in a statement. "This is a perfect example of how illogical and unpredictable a jury can be. The Breakers completely disagrees with the verdict and fully intends to appeal."
