Chicago Researchers Set Net Speed Record
CHICAGO (UPI) -- Chicago researchers have designed a method for transporting lots of data over the Internet for long distances. The National Center for Data Mining at the University of Illinois at Chicago designed the long-distance protocol that sent 6.8 billion bits per second -- a long-distance Internet speed record, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
"This remarkable achievement with the UDT protocol paves the way for transatlantic data-intensive applications," said Cees de Laat of the University of Amsterdam, who witnessed the test.
While protocols can send lots of data fast over short distances, sending a lot of data long distances takes time. The protocol will be useful to scientists who must send huge amounts of data to overseas colleagues, but it may be just as useful for business, according to Robert Grossman, director of the UIC data mining center. "Any global Fortune 500 company has data all over the world," he told the Sun-Times.
