But it
could teach them to be more responsible once they are of age to drink and still
have a DD or at least to call a cab to drive them home when they've been
drinking.

Subject: RE: [Sndbox] My stance on underage drinkingIf you opt for no punishment at all then you have a situation where you have just taught your child that it is alright to break the rules (and/or laws) as long as you call home before driving. The severity of the punishment can be modified to fit extenuating circumstances, but in my opinion, not punishing at all is a recipe for disaster.Charles Mims

Subject: RE: [Sndbox] My stance on underage drinkingRight, Angela was saying she wouldnt punish the teenager and she would punish the 8 year old, thats why I said it didnt make sense. <If Im wrong on what I interpeted, someone can correct me>I agree with Angela in the sense that underage drinking is very common. With most kids, not all, its going to happen atleast once. Most likely more than once. As for punishment, Im torn on that one. I had the type of mother that I could call in that situation without worry of getting severly punished, she would have loked more at the fact that I called her and didnt risk that drive. It depends on the kid in my opinion. Some kids are way too easily talked into things by peers, others arent. <shrug>

Subject: RE: [Sndbox] My stance on underage drinkingActually, I'd punish the teenager too. I get them home safely first, but you better believe the punishment would be forthcoming. It would likely be *mitigated* by them having the sense to call me instead of driving drunk, but even that bit of intelligence wouldn't get them out of trouble only lessen the sentence.Charles Mims

Subject: RE: [Sndbox] My stance on underage drinkingI actually agree with you on the drinking thing, I was just pointing out that I can see how Jackie sees punishing an 8 year old and not a teenager is a little well, it doesnt make sense.

Subject: RE: [Sndbox] My stance on underage drinkingMy point was which is better, punishing them for drinking and calling you so they don't drive again and them never calling you again and getting behind the wheel of a car or not punishing them and them calling you whenever they need a ride. Many times I got in the car with someone that was drunk b/c I knew if I called my parents (even on the times I wasn't drinking) they would ground me for life. So I snuck around and did it and was lucky I survived.-----Original Message-----

I know most won't agree with this, but here goes. I'll explain all now so I don't have to elaborate on it in any other posts on this subject. I don't feel that underage drinking always leads to alcoholism or that all teens that drink are troubled. I think a lot do it just to do it, some b/c of peer pressure and some just b/c they like it. None are really good reasons, but it does happen, every day. Now when my kids are in high school and they wind up at a party and drink, then I want them to call me and I'll come pick them up w/o really punishing them for it b/c I'd rather if they do get drunk to call me to come get them than to try to drive home themselves or get in the car with someone else. Not to mention in a lot of cases the more you try to stop them from drinking, the more they are going to do it behind your back just to spite you. I don't approve of underage drinking, regardless of the fact I did it myself as a teen. But the fact still remains, it is a part of everyday life. While maybe not normal as Jackie says, it is part of the norm. Ok, I've put in my two cents now. Good night all.
so an 8 year old who misjudged a jump should be disciplined but a teenager who drinks shouldnt as long as they call for a ride home? that makes sense.
