I just saw a Zagi that was covered in Ultracote.  What's the big deal, you say.  Well, this was the electric Zagi with white bead foam as the main part of the wing.  I have covered many epp foam airplanes with Ultracote.  But, my previous experience tells me that styrofoam would melt under the heat required to bond Ultracote.

Yes, I know about low heat coverings but this was regular Ultracote, NOT low heat film.

The builder said he used his heat gun to create a glazed surface on the white foam.  Then lightly sanded it and applied the Ultracote as usual.  Unfortunately, I was not able to talk to the person that did this so I could not get the details I was looking for.

When I've tried to apply Ultracote to white foam I ended up with a rather pock marked finish because the heat from my iron melted the foam underneath.  I have never heard of pretreating the foam and then applying the film.  Yes, I could lower the heat but then I don't think I would get adequate adhesion nor any level of shrink.

If any of you have performed this job I'd appreciate hearing FIRST HAND how to go about doing it without melting the white foam underneath.

Thanks in advance,
Ed
