The Seattle Area Soaring Society does not have enough extra people
to use this tact. But, Adam Weston, the hlg CD has worked out a scheme
that does almost as well. see http://www.reddata.com/sass/ for our
contest schedule.
Adam divides each round into two heats and let the top group time for
the lower scoring group. This lets the new guy get advice from the more
experienced ones on every round they fly and also lets them see how
the top flyers do their thing while they are timing for them. It also
tends to level the scores a bit as each heat is composed of a bunch
of flyers within the same range of scores. Sort of makes it harder for
the top guys and easier for the new guys. Some of last years new guys
are making it real hard on the rest of us this year.
Adam of thermal-grommit works fame plays CD and keeps all of us honest
once a month for our hlg contests. See his site at http://www.tgworks.com/

Tom Watson explained:
>I flew a HLG contest earlier this month and they tried an interesting twist:
>Assigned timers and spotters (yes, two of them) to every flyer for every
>round. That helps new dolts like me learn to find and work lift, because
>some of the better spotters get assigned to more flyers and I get a chance
>to time for some of the better flyers.
