In my opinion a good indication of a great tip launch is if you can hold plane 1" to 1.5" in from the tip of the wing, supporting the weight of the plane, you will probably have a good tip launch plane. Try it with what you have, that is if you want to have the confidence that you can throw it as hard as you can in a contest situation.
