Thin multiple layers are usually best. Heavier glass is okay if you have to work inside where you can't rub it down good. Use plenty of epoxy in that case. It is difficulty to layup thin cloth if you have to reach.
Even with an inside repair (unless it is just a crack), I use a layer or two of .75 cloth on the outside. Flare and fill and sand, etc. 5 min will work, but you really have to know what you are doing and be able to do the job within two minutes. Avoid 15 min epoxy (just not that great).
