basically the problem with bonding aluminium is the oxide coating formed as stated by someone else. by this you are relying on the strngth of the aluminium to aluminium oxide layer. ive done laboraty reports on this and the way in which they fail which is a cohesive failure between oxide and metal. off the top of my head (im in england for interglide before the f3J worlds) the aluminium is etched in chromic or oxalic acid then surface cleaned with chromic acid. (surface cleaned is meant as a complete checially cleaned at the surface removing all impurities. then it is dipped in a siloxane solution in which a silicone metal oxide is formed which has a stronger chemically adhesive surface bond.
