I use onboard battery voltage indicators (bar-graph type) in all my 
ships.  They are commercially available from $10-14 and usually sold at 
hobby shops which carry R/C hardware.  It's not worth it making them 
yourself because the parts cost more than the built up unit.  I  know this 
cause I built the first one.  To build one, it takes a connector, bar-graph 
led array, a chip and a couple of resistors ... all available at Radio Shack.
But by all means, use one in EVERY ship you have.  (Cheap insurance!)
