David, if you want to bring this young modeler into the world of RC, particularly slope RC, he needs to be taught the etiquette and moral values that make slopers such great guys to hang around.
He should have absolutely no doubt at his possible violation and of this etiquette and should have a clear understanding that he will be cut off from the group should he act dishonorably.
