There isn't a steel armature core.  The wire winds serve this
structural purpose.  Without a core, the armature is lighter.

Invented by Dr. Fritz Faulhaber in the 1950's.  If you search
the web you'll find a German company by the name of Fritz
Faulhaber that makes coreless motors among other things :)
