What? ... a SCAM?
Does that meant the check I got was not valid?
There is a wonderful and TRUE story you can find on the net of a fellow who did just that with one promotional cheque he received. The story documents how he did it just for kicks to see how long it took the authorities to realize the mistake. He probably could have gotten away with the money, but in the end he returned it (he had already turned it into a cashier's cheque by then), as he couldn't live with the stress of worrying about it.
