Great question. The answer depends predominantly upon the person you ask.
All the big name radios will work fairly well. Each has it's own limitations and advantages. There is no perfect radio.
The only advice I give is to buy the most advanced radio you can. I've never had too much radio but I've several times had too little. If I'd have skipped the intermediate steps I would have saved quite a bit of money.
