Like D O I used to believe that Crystals are Crystals

My main use of crystals since the late 70's was Microprocessors

About 10 years ago I purchased some Microprocessors that suggested
using a series resistor but did not suggest a precise value. I used
the lower of the range of selected resistors and the recommended
small capacitors and went on with my coding and debugging.

After a couple of days the Microprocessor stopped working. After a
day of troubleshooting I replaced the crystal and was back in
business. Then a couple of days later the crystal broke. Replaced it
and upped the Resistor value.

I cut the metal can off the broken Crystals and found they were
fractured. Next I cut the cans off about half a dozen good crystals
and found (much to my horror) no 2 alike in physical appearance.
Data from the manufacturer is mostly non existent.

I remember reading something from Karlton on this list a few years
ago about him testing batches of these Multiplex Crystals. He said
that he rejected a batch of them because they were not on frequency.

I got a warm feeling from that.
